The Permanent Exposition presents the development of the literature and book culture of Slovakia from ancient history to the present day.

The exposition, which presents to visitors centuries of Slovak literary history, is chronologically divided into 9 parts:
I. The National Hall - Seat of Matica slovenská /1863 - 1875/
II. The Great Moravian Empire /800 - 1000 AD/ - the cradle of Slavonic literature
III. The New Constitution of the Medieval Literature after the rise of the Hungarian state /1000 - 1500/
IV. Renaissance and Humanistic Literature /1500 - 1650/
V. Literature of the Baroque Period in Slovakia /1650 - 1780/
VI. Enlightenment and Beginnings of the National Awakening /1780 - 1820/
VII. Classicism /1820 - 1840/
VIII. Romanticism /1840 - 1880/ and Matica slovenská years /1863 - 1875/
IX. Realism and Slovak Modernism /1870 - 1918/
