NATIONAL CEMETERY

The National Cemetery with the graves and artistically valuable grave stones of over 400 outstanding personalities from Slovak cultural, scientific and national life was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1967.

The National Cemetery is located in Sklabinská Street in Martin. Founded at the beginning of the 19th century as a small town cemetery, it gained national importance when the town of Martin became unofficial capital of Slovak culture. Karol Kuzmány, a vice-chairman of Matica Slovenská, was among the first significant personalities buried there in 1866.

Since the end of the 1st World War outstanding personalities from other cities and abroad (M. Kukučín - Croatia, J. C. Hronský - Argentina, M. Hodža - USA) have been re-buried at the National Cemetery. The National Cemetery was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1967.

Organised in 6 sectors (A - F) tha National Cemetery contains the grave stones of over 400 outstanding personalities from Slovak cultural, scientific and national life. For example painters: M. Benka, M. Galanda, writers: Z. Jesenská, V. Roy, M. Kukučín, photographers K. Plicka, P. Socháň and many others.
